Akon is being ordered to pay $164,786.99 in back rent after he was sued by leasing company GTFM for unpaid rent. According to documents obtained by TMZ, GTFM claims Akon stopped paying the $25K per month lease after a clothing company Akon owned stopped operating in the space inside of the Empire State Building. Here are more details:
The leasing company, GTFM, said Akon agreed in July of 2012 to pay $25k per month and did so until July of 2015 when he stopped paying rent. GTFM claims Akon’s company finally left in January of 2016, owing almost 7 months of rent.
GTFM had sued Akon, but the singer never responded to the lawsuit, so the judge issued a default judgment.
This revelation comes right after Akon made news cycle by saying he could have restored Puerto Rico’s power in 30 days, but the U.S. government rejected his plan.
