Nike will be celebrating its Air Max sneakers by hosting events in three cities and a special collaboration with Acronym founder Errolson Hugh per Ryan Nagelhout. Air Max Day has been scheduled for March 26 by the sneaker company, and on Friday it announced there will be special sneaker release exclusively to the events in the three host cities being Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles in a “digitally connected experience” using the company’s SNKRS app.
Nike has described the occasion as an artistic experience in cities around the world featuring art based on past Air Max designs. Special sneaker releases in New York, Los Angeles and cities will celebrate the Air Max legacy with unique colorways, while Nike will host Nike ON AIR, a design workshop, in Paris, London, New York, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo that brings the Nike design process to Nike fans attending.
Nike will have a contest from March 22 to April 15 and ask fans to imagine a new Nike Air Max, from concept to coloring and. The winner may get to witness his imaginative design come to life, as Nike has released a statement saying that there’s a chance of actually putting the shoe in production.
Upon completion of the Nike: ON AIR program, each participant will submit their Air Max concept to a judging panel, including Nike designers and city ambassadors, who will select the top three designs from each city. From there, these concepts will be turned into 3D designs that will go to a global vote on nike.com/onair (in a style akin to last year’s Vote Forward campaign). The most-voted design per city will go into production and be made available at a later date.
Nike and Acronym collaborated to reimagine the Nike Air VaporMax. Three colorways celebrate “the art of disguise,” featuring a laceless design, Nike Flyknit upper and a modified heel clip. Here’s the Johnny’s Icy Passage colorway. The sneakers will be in select retail stores for $225 on March 24 and two days later on nike.com and the SNKRS app.
