KSU junior guard, Amaad Wainright, was arrested by U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force for his alleged connection in a January road-rage incident involving gunfire. Wainright will be held in custody in the Johnson County jail.
Back in February, KCTV5 reported that Wainright’s car was involved in a road-rage incident. The victim told KCTV5:
[Wainwright’s] passenger opened the door, held up a gun and shot one bullet at the back door.
Fortunately, the bullet struck the seat behind the victim-driver, and no one was injured.
Initially, Wainright was not arrested because his involvement was unclear.
Subsequently in March, in response to KCTV5’s report, K-State stated:
We are aware of the situation involving Amaad Wainright. Amaad fully cooperated with authorities and was not charged. To our knowledge, this matter is resolved.
Apparently, K-State’s statement was a bit premature…
Despite KSU’s belief, this matter was far from being resolved.
Around 2:00 pm this afternoon, Wainright was arrested and charged with two felonies: fleeing and eluding and obstruction.
Now, Wainwright is considered an “involved other” in a crime of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage to property (estimated at $1,500), and criminal discharge of a firearm.
In a new statement, Kansas State Athletic Director Gene Taylor provided:
We are aware of Amaad’s situation, and due to the seriousness of the charges he has been indefinitely suspended from our men’s basketball team per athletic department policy…
We take matters such as these very seriously and will re-evaluate his status as we learn more information.
Wainright averaged 2.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13.1 minutes per game this season on KSU’s road to the Elite 8.
