This year for Mother’s Day, it will be a special one for Dashay Murphy, a mother who was pregnant and in jail. She will see her freedom as she was just bailed out with the help of the National Black Mamas Bail Out Day campaign, per ABC 7 in Los Angeles.
“It feels good to be home to be with my baby,” said Murphy. “I have this baby and one other child so it’s good to be back to take care of my family.”
Murphy is eight months pregnant and is now relieved that she can enjoy the holiday without being in a place like jail. Public Defender Sherise Francis detailed how the Community Action Network got Murphy to become a free woman again.
“Community Action Network reached out to provide assistance in the case and get her out of custody, which was a concern because Ms. Murphy is obviously carrying a baby, and we didn’t want her and her child to be in danger or having issues with her being in custody trying to fight the case,” said Francis.
The Los Angeles Community Action Network also noted how jailed black men and women have to pay tens of millions of dollars to even make bail. Many of these men and women believe that the money should be invested in bettering their communities.
