Ex-Sex and the City Star Cynthia Nixon believes black and brown communities should be given the first opportunity at obtaining licenses to sell legal marijuana as a form of reparations.
Speaking at the New York Cannabis Parade, Nixon said people of color in New York should get the first shot at legalized marijuana as a form of reparations and that cannabis the “crown jewel in the racist war or drugs.”
“Arresting people–particularly people of color–for cannabis is the crown jewel in the racist war on drugs and we must pluck it down,” she said. “We must expunge people’s records; we must get people out of prison.”
Heading to an interview with Forbes.com immediately following, Nixon expounded on her pro-cannabis stance.
“Now that cannabis is exploding as an industry, we have to make sure that those communities that have been harmed and devastated by marijuana arrests get the first shot at this industry,” said Nixon.
“We [must] prioritize them in terms of licenses. It’s a form of reparations,” she said.
“The use of marijuana has been effectively legal for white people for a really long time,” said Nixon. “It’s time that we legalize it for everybody else.”
In addition to basing her campaign on cannabis, Nixon is urging voters to “Vote for the homo and not the Cuomo.
