A woman was detained by U.S. border authorities for two weeks after she accidentally crossed over into the United States during a jog.
KTLA.com reports that Cedella Roman, a citizen of France visiting her mother in British Columbia went for a morning jog when she accidentally crossed the border and entered the U.S.
“I said to myself, well I may have crossed the border — but they’ll probably only give me a fine or they’ll tell me to go back to Canada or they’ll give me a warning,” she tells the CBC.
Instead of issuing a warning, border agents took Roman into custody and held her for two weeks while she and her mom produced the necessary documents identifying her as a French citizen visiting Canada and that the border crossing was unintentional. Roman’s mother Christiane Ferne said there were no signs indicating the border was there.
The biggest beef of Roman’s mother, Christiane Ferne, is that no signs were present in the area where her daughter was jogging calling attention to the border. “It’s like a trap,” she says.
The border separating Canada from the U.S. is the longest in the world spanning 5500 miles.
