Many NBA fans are still shocked about the Warriors getting richer by signing Center DeMarcus Cousins, who is arguably the best at his position in the league. He will not rush himself to get back on the court though coming off of a serious Achilles injury that sidelined him for most of the second half of the season.
While on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Head Coach Steve Kerr discussed how he spoke with Cousins on the phone about how the team will utilize him. Cousins knew Kerr’s gameplan due to playing against Golden State plenty of times.
“Well, it was a conversation that needed to happen before each side committed to the other,” said Kerr. “And so that’s what we did. I had two conversations with him on the phone the day he signed, before he signed. He also spoke with Kevin, with Steph. I believe he spoke with Draymond as well. These were the conversations we were having. So from our perspective, what I told DeMarcus was, ‘We have never had a center like you. We like to play through the post.” And he said ‘I know that. I’ve played against you. You guys throw the ball into the post a lot and you run a lot of split cuts around the post man. I love passing.’ We know DeMarcus is a hell of a passer. So we’re gonna be able to throw the ball into the post to him but get some buckets too, because he’s so powerful.”
Kerr also added that Cousins will be willing to sacrifice how many times he will have the ball. Kerr thinks this season will be beneficial for Cousins in succeeding in free agency next summer.
