Shayne Holland is a resident of an Indianapolis apartment complex River Crossings Apartments where the residents have a pool they could all enjoy as part of the amenities available. According to local Indianapolis news network WRTV-TV, Holland was enjoying his time at the pool and was approached by a woman who questioned how and why Holland was in the complex’s pool. The report exchange between Holland and the woman escalated as described by WRTV-TV
“She didn’t introduce herself, she didn’t say hello,” said Holland. “She says, ‘do you live here?’ I’m like, ‘yes, I live here, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t live here.'”
Holland said the woman pressed him further, asking him to tell her exactly where he lived.
“I’m like, ‘I live over there, but if you’re asking me for my address, I mean, I don’t feel comfortable giving you my entire address without knowing who you are.”
Holland said he showed the woman his key fob, which he used to get into the pool and the woman grabbed it out of his hand.
At this point the property manager came out and also asked Holland to leave although she recognized he was a renter in the complex. The woman who initially approached Holland was later identified as an off duty police officer who seems to have taken her duty to serve the public too far when dealing with Holland.
The incident was caught on camera by Holland, and he simply wants an apology from the woman and the property manager. The report by WRTV-TV mentioned that he doesn’t want to call the incident a case of racism but has no other explanation for the bizarre and cruel treatment he faced.
“Honestly, I don’t want to jump to racism. I don’t want to say she just pointed me out because I’m the only black dude in the pool, but that was the case.”
Holland appears to be a black man caught around a white woman who couldn’t fathom he would be able to live in the same complex and enjoy the same amenities that she was privy to.
