If you are going to be a trash talking kicker, you have to make all of your pressure field goals and Vanderjagt did not.

Plus, he pissed off Peyton Manning, so he wasn’t the brightest kicker in the world. Now, he is under investigation for possibly Chokeslamming a kid like The Undertaker.

Former NFL kicker Mike Vanderjagt has been suspended from his middle school coaching job after he was accused of grabbing and screaming at a student, apparently because the child taunted Vanderjagt over his missed field goal in the Colts’ loss to the Steelers in the 2005 playoffs.

The Naples News reports that Vanderjagt is a part-time coach at a middle school in Marco Island, Florida, but that he was suspended from that position when the school’s dean of students called the police to say that Vanderjagt had been witnessed grabbing a student by the throat. According to the police report, a student was taunting Vanderjagt by yelling “wide left, wide left,” and Vanderjagt walked up to him, grabbed him by the throat and started cursing at him. Both the student involved (who apparently didn’t realize that Vanderjagt’s miss against the Steelers was actually wide right) and another student who witnessed the incident told police the same story.

I am sure Vanderjagt’s students went on the Internet and did some research on their teacher leading tot he Nelson Muntz style slander.

I can not confirm or deny if Vanderjagt was liquored up or not.

If you are an undrafted free agent signed by a NFL team you don’t have long to impress them. You have to make an impact quickly before you are kicked to the curb.

Unfortunately for Joiner he will be playing The Longest Yard for while and won’t have that opportunity to impress.

Linebacker Brandon Joiner has been sentenced to three years in prison for two counts of aggravated robbery and one count of felony drug possession. The charges stem from an incident in 2007 when Joiner was playing at Texas A&M.

Joiner and another man forced their way into an apartment and assaulted two men before binding them with duct tape. They stole their wallets, keys, cellphones and marijuana. When police searched Joiner’s home they also found hydrocodone and Ectasy.

He hopes to get out in 6-8 months with good behavior. The  Bengals haven’t said if they would still be interested whenever he is release.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports that Sapp is out.  Per Jackson, Showtime has confirmed that James Brown of CBS, Phil Simms of CBS, and Cris Collinsworth of NBC will be returning.

It’s unknown whether Showtime will be replacing Sapp on the cast.

This is not a typical lead story by any mean, but with so many NFL players struggling with post career finances and finding a post sports  identity I felt this story deserved some attention.

While browsing deadspin.com I came across this story about Jon Kitna becoming a high school math teacher.

First I think its an amazing story.  I can’t speak about Kitna’s post career finances, but I am greatly proud to see a guy who did not allow the NFL to define him, and who actually had a plan after football.

I struggle to understand why so many college educated former NFL players would rather struggle or live in squalor when the actually point of going to college is to get an education, learn a life skill, and allow yourself to mature.

So many former pro athletes would rather file bankruptcy, or struggle greatly instead of doing what most normal folks do that went to college.  Jon Kitna went out and got a regular job that pleases him and I’m sure his students.

While being interviewed on the radio by Mitch in the Morning on KJR in Seattle, Kitna answered several candid question regarding why a guy who enjoyed success in the NFL would become a teacher.

When asked why he became a teacher, Kitna stated,  ”Well, that was my degree, and I enjoy it. I enjoy math. I’ve found it much more difficult than I thought coming back here. And I’ve always felt like I had a healthy respect for teachers, but now I feel like I just have even more. … It’s overwhelming, honestly. And part of that’s coming in the middle of the year and not having done it for 16 years and things like that. A lot has changed. But yeah, my wife and I always felt like our greatest impact for our lives was gonna be in a public high school coaching and teaching. And for me, the thing that I like to teach the most is math, and the thing that I enjoy the most is math. So that was always kinda the hook for us.”

As I stated before this would not be a lead story by any means on most sports networks, but I feel its essential for athletes whether they be professionals now or retired to understand that yes you went to college to learn, and regardless of your status and wealth you can continue to learn and give back in ways that don’t have any monetary value.

RB Felix Jones likely won’t practice all week in the OTAs and could miss some of the next two weeks because of a shoulder injury. Coach Jason Garrett said Jones “can’t catch the ball” over his head right now. He will be worked back slowly into the mix and could be ready for the minicamp on June 12-14.

I will explain why he is theory is flawed after you read his quotes.

When asked before the 49ers’ divisional playoff win over the New Orleans Saints if he might someday throw for more yards in a season than Drew Brees, or some of the NFL’s other more high-octane quarterbacks, Smith was quite defiant.

“I really don’t care,” Smith said. “I’m looking to outscore him. He can throw for as many yards as he wants.”

“I could absolutely care less on yards per game,” Smith told Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle on Wednesday. “I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you’re losing games in the second half, guess what, you’re like the Carolina Panthers and you’re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games. That’s great. You’re not winning, though.”

That is all fine and dandy except………

Alex Smith has one winning season under his belt and a bunch of ok stats. Your stats can be average if you are a perennial winner, but when your career record is 32-34 and you have only started two full seasons in the league, you need to slow your roll.

Yes, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady throw for a lot of yards, but they also have something Smith doesn’t have.

Got fired on his day off and now getting sued.

According to Brent Schrotenboer of U-T San Diego, tight end Kellen Winslow has been accused of trashing a house that he had rented for $9,000 per month.  The suit contends that “every corner of the house was damaged,” and that Persian rugs and carpeting “were stained with dog urine and also littered with dog feces, and that “[t]he house was overpowered with a putrid stench of animal waste.”

Winslow’s lawyer, Brian Watkins, says the lawsuit is “bogus,” and that the litigation represents “a shakedown of a professional athlete.”

The six-month lease started in January 2011.  “They want to portray it as though Kellen Winslow had a fraternity of football friends partying,” Watkins said.  “But the house was rented for his wife, who was pregnant.  She was living there with her mother and a housekeeper.  There was no partying going on.  Kellen was rarely even there.”

$9g a month?

Was he renting from Diddy?  No wonder these athletes end up broke.

Plax wasn’t awful last year with the Jets. He was very serviceable, didn’t look like the time in jail diminished his skill set any.

Unfortunately, for him can’t find a gig even from teams who have zero impact wide receivers.

On paper, the Miami Dolphins could have room for a veteran receiver trying to make the team. They have Davone Bess, Brian Hartline, Legedu Naanee, Clyde Gates, and a collection of inexperienced wideouts atop their depth chart.

Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald writes that Plaxico Burress “would love” to work out for the Dolphins, but the team has not shown any interest. GM Jeff Ireland has said he “might be done” at receiver. If the young receivers don’t look good in OTA/minicamp season, then perhaps Miami could invite a veteran like Burress or Braylon Edwards to camp.

We get our share of bad tattoos around here. But this one may be one of the coolest ones we have ever featured.

Last year when I as covering Miami Dolphins training camp, a mountain of a man walked by me with one of the most elaborate tattoos I had ever seen. Tackle Lydon Murtha’s left arm is a full sleeve showing the muscle like the skin had been ripped off. Thankfully, a decent picture has finally emerged showing off just how cool this tattoo is. The detail and coloring is amazing and it just looks like a tattoo an offensive lineman would have.

It is also believed that he was going to tattoo his right arm to make it look like a bionic replacement. As soon as we get word on that we will pass it along.

That is a nice thing to say, but the reality of the situation is if the Eagles aren’t Championship contenders this year, they both will be gone.

Asked by ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio about talk that Reid is on the hot seat entering the season, and may lose his job if the Eagles miss the playoffs for the second year in a row, Vick said he won’t stand by and watch a coach he respects take heat for another disappointing season.

After telling Kellen Winslow his services are no longer needed, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers found a tight end whose services they could use.

Former Indianapolis Colts tight end Dallas Clark agreed to terms with the Bucs this morning after meeting with the team last week.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.  At 33 years of age and what looks like the downside of his career it will be interesting to see if Clark can match the production that the Buccaneers already had in Winslow.

Clark has had 2 relatively quiet injury plagued seasons and only had 34 catches for 352 yards.

Funny thing is Winslow all but doubled that production while playing with injuries and not practicing.

So Clark is a Schiano guy but Winslow is not.  I am definitely interested in seeing how this plays out.

In all seriousness the “Sucker Punch” is one of the weakest acts on Earth.  If you want to fight, square up man to man and go at it.  Best man wins and all is forgiven.

I would never trust a player who sucker punches a teammate because there is always a bigger issue bubbling under the surface.

Titus Young, Detroit’s 2nd-year wide receiver, reportedly punched safety Louis Delmas in the face last week while Delmas was not looking, after the two had a confrontation during a voluntary workout at the team facility last week, according to MLive.com.

As a result, Young is not being allowed to participate in the OTA’s this week, while Delmas is participating. Head coach Jim Schwartz refused to comment on the matter.

Young is a good young player, but not good enough to cause these type of problems.
