Back in the day I was a big fan of Doc Gooden. The big curve ball and the electric fastball was the reason I actually wanted to be a pitcher when I was a young Bonafide Sports Expert.
Alas though when you look up the phrase:
“Wasted Potential”
You might see a picture of Gooden (with Darryl Strawberry in the background). Gooden has battled his demons both on and off the field, but the latest story I don’t know how anyone could make an excuse for him (plenty have been made over the years). His wife is claiming that he has abandoned her and their children. The New York Post has more details: Read more…

Where is Jesse Jackson?
Here are the full context of Limbaugh comments from Yahoo.com:
“That cracker made a lot of African-American millionaires,” the radio commentator said Tuesday on his show after the New York Yankees owner died at age 80. “He fired a bunch of white guys as managers left and right.” Read more…
ESPN.com is reporting that New York Yankee owner George Steinbrenner has passed away this morning. According to reports, he suffered a massive heart attack at his Tampa, FL home late Monday night and was taken to the hospital and was in serious condition. He passed away at 6:30 a.m. , sources close to the family report.
The majority of what Jose Canseco said in his book “Juiced” was absolutely correct. In the history of baseball, he will go down as the one who started the crackdown on the whole steroid era.
But because he is Jose Canseco he will never get the credit he deserves. Read more…
Bobby Bonilla is clearly a client of Wu Tang Financial, and he heeded their advice to “protect his $*@#*%$ neck!” We thought that Michael Finley and Allan Houston were masters of getting paid, but the folks over at No Guts, No Glory report that Bonilla pulled off the greatest heist ever (you were close, Drew Gooden): Read more…
First we should state the obvious; Upton wasn’t exactly Usain Bolt tracking down that ball in the gap. Did Longoria overreact? Probably, but that is how I would expect a leader of a clubhouse to react.
If you want to be a winner you go all out, all the time. No leisurely jogs in centerfield just because you don’t feel like running hard. Read more…
Armando Galarraga of the Tigers was just robbed. With two outs in the ninth inning, one out away from a perfect game, Jason Donald of the Indians hit a ground ball to first base, and what happened next will be talked about for a long time. Check the video here.
Everyone can clearly see that Jason Donald was out. The reaction from everyone is classic after the play. Everyone can forget about Bud Selig granting Armando a perfect game because, well… it’s Bud Selig, so I don’t need to say more. The most incredible part of this story is how everyone handled it so well. By all accounts, Jim Joyce was distraught after the game. He said:
“Most important call of my career and I kicked the s$&t out of it. I cost that kid a perfect game. I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay. I don’t blame them a bit or anything that was said, Joyce said. I would’ve said it myself if I had been Galarraga. I would’ve been the first person in my face, and he never said a word to me.” Read more…
I am sad to see this day. The best baseball player I have seen live, Ken Griffey, Jr., is retiring after 21 seasons in the “big leagues.” Here is what he had to say via a statement released by the Mariners:
“I’ve come to a decision today to retire from Major League Baseball as an active player. This has been on my mind recently, but it’s not an easy decision to come by. I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to have played Major League Baseball for so long and thankful for all the friendships I have made, while also being proud of my accomplishments.”
Let me run down some of those accomplishments for you. Not including the strike shortened season, from 1993-2000, he went .309AVG 45HR 109RBI, .322AVG 40HR 90RBI, .303AVG 49HR 140RBI, .304AVG 56HR 147RBI, .284AVG 56HR 146RBI, .285AVG 48HR 134RBI, .271AVG 40HR 118RBI. Read more…
