Former NFL MVP Cam Newton is still looking for a team to sign him after he spent all of last season as a free agent.
Cam was the QB for Auburn’s pro day and looked very good in front of scouts and other team personnel. Now it’s a waiting game for him to see if someone gives him a chance to be at least a backup.
The wait could be shorter than expected though. According to CBS’s Josina Anderson, Cam to the Jets is a possibility.
“It really, Joy, just makes me think about the Jets. … Obviously, they’ve got to get Aaron Rodgers first. But if something were to happen to #12 and he is injured and can’t perform, is Zach Wilson really where they want to put all of their aspirations?”
Cam did give a list of 9 players he’d be a backup for and Aaron Rodgers and the Jets were on that list.
However, Newton then rattled off a list of quarterbacks he is willing to sit behind, confirming that he is willing to look at a backup role to get back in the league. This is not a bad course of action for a player who did not suit up last season. He highlighted that the first three quarterbacks he would be open to starting behind: Deshaun Watson, Lamar Jackson and Justin Fields, in order.
Despite his confidence, the choice of players he is willing to back up seems to indicate that he is open to even being a third-choice quarterback. He mentioned Malik Willis as one of those players. Anyone who saw Willis play for the Tennessee Titans will not have him as the starter this season. This seems to indicate that Newton is alright sitting behind both Ryan Tannehill and Malik Willis.
That would be quite the comedown for a former MVP like Cam Newton.
While Cam Newton might have inside news of Ryan Tannehill being traded or cut, it is still unlikely that Malik Willis will be the starter this season. What feels more likely is that he misspoke. However, that we are even considering such possibilities for a once-fearsome player shows just how the tables have turned on him.
Cam Newton has his work cut out to come back into the league, and the fans realize that as much as him. At the moment, even being a third-stringer does not seem out of the ordinary for him.
We’ll see if that turns into something, though.
