Frankie Edgar came into tonight’s fight with everything to gain but also the most to lose. He fought with that chip on his shoulder and never allowed the ‘Prodigy’ BJ Penn to attack him.
Frankie landed takedowns in both of the early rounds and used his ground and pound to rough up Penn. Penn was lost for much of the fight and couldn’t figure out a way to limit Frankie’s speed and aggressiveness. Finally in the 3rd round referee Herb Dean put a stop to BJ’s suffering and declared Edgar the winner by TKO. Penn was busted up badly by this time and blood was splashed across the canvas.
Sadly this is the last we’ll see of BJ Penn and this fight wasn’t indicative of the type of career that he’s had. Penn was known for always being the aggressor and having the guts to take on opponents of any size. How fitting that his last fight would come against his smallest opponent and would leave him completely unproductive. The greatness of BJ Penn will be discussed for ever but the greatness of Frankie Edgar can still grow.
Edgar entered this fight as the 3rd ranked fighter in the 145 lb division and his dominant performance over Penn must open the eyes of Dana White and other UFC decision makers. Frankie showed that at this weight he can outwork anyone in the octagon and his takedowns become his greatest weapon against the smaller fighters.
The story of Frankie Edgar can add an even greater chapter moving forward and it’s only right that it begins with a boost from BJ Penn. Here Are the Results From the Other Fights:
