The Bobby Valentine saga is far from over, despite the fact he was fired 3 weeks ago. Valentine is going on a sort of ‘Throw everyone under the bus’ tour where, like a disgruntled ex he’s dishing all the Red Sox dirt to any media outlet that will listen.
Valentine’s first victim in his ‘slander festival’ is the Red Sox’s beloved DH David Ortiz. During an interview on Bob Costas’ show ‘Costas Tonight’ on NBC Sports Network, Valetine said the following in reference to Ortiz
David Ortiz came back after spending about six weeks on the disabled list and we thought it was only going to be a week…He got two hits the first two times up, drove in a couple of runs; we were off to the races. Then he realized that this trade meant that we’re not going to run this race and we’re not even going to finish the race properly and he decided not to play anymore. I think at that time it was all downhill from there.
The trade Valentine references to is of course, the blockbuster multi-player trade that saw players like Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Carl Crawford all head west to the LA Dodgers.
All of this comes up ironically at a time where Ortiz is close to inking a deal with the Red Sox that will keep him there for another two seasons. Pretty petty for Valentine to take a booming shot at one of the Red Sox and baseball in general’s most beloved figures. Also, one can easily say in return that Valentine, too, quit on the team once it was left in pieces after the fire sale mid-season.
Valentine is quickly unraveling all his contributions to the game, which have spanned over a quarter of a century. The man is just unapologetic in his desire to shake all fault for the mess that was the 2012 Red Sox, and instead of being mum altogether he’s chosen to take the immature route out and lash out against the organization. Keep up the good work, Bobby.
