It sounds like new Texas Head Coach and booster Red McCombs have had a conversation on the phone to clear the air. He made a short statement to clarify his statements and make it known that he is not racist:
“My interest is in Longhorn athletics, and in the University of Texas,” McCombs said. “My interest was to see that we hire one of the best three coaches in the United States. I’m not sure I knew anything about the race issue until it was broadcast like that,” McCombs said. “I didn’t even think about that. He wanted my help and my support,” McCombs said. “I told him I’d be happy to do it.”
I still believe that it was the height of arrogance all over his original comments. He basically completely insulted the Longhorns new coach in a way that would suggest some racial undertones. Also, he seems to have made sure that we know Strong needed HIS help in succeeding at Texas.
I actually didn’t see an apology in all that. Good luck with all this Charlie. You might need it.
