In our latest showcase, we present to you Spill.
Spill is rapper based out of Tallahassee, Florida.
When going through the music in my e-mail, Spill separated himself from the rest. First of all, his sound, beat selection and lyrical content don’t remind me of everyone else.
After listening to a few tracks, it was clear to me that Spill was spitting from the heart and that’s something I can rock with.
Not only that, but Spill raps in such a way where he leaves you holding onto every single word ala Drake.
His Calculated Risk mixtape is hands down one of the best tapes I’ve heard all year.
As his schedule continues to expand, Spill was gracious enough to answer a serious of questions.
What is something about yourself fans should know?
I’m hilarious! I love to laugh and make people laugh, it’s all about positive vibes and good energy. I’m also a big time music head. It’s nothing to catch me listening to anything from Anita Ward to Maroon 5. Im also deep into sports, basketball is my favorite sport (word to Kurtis Blow). You’ll hear me intertwine a lot of sports references in my music.
You do a really good job of putting songs together, so I must ask what is the process like?
The process is motivated by my feelings in everyday life. The music I make is highly influenced by what I’m feeling at the moment, that’s how I get my music to feel so authentic. The first thing I do is search for a dope beat, I know I’ve found that perfect beat when ideas start to form within the first minute of listening to the instrumental. In a sense, it’s more so like I let the instrumentals choose me, instead of the other way around. Once an idea gets rolling, things just start to fall in place for me on each track. As I said earlier, I’m a big music head so samples play a big part in my musical process. Samples are great attention grabbers, it’s like taking yourself back to that same feeling you had when you first heard the original record. I love that feeling, so I want a potential listener to have that same feeling.
Who are some of the biggest influences in your music?
The biggest influences in my music are Lil Wayne, Drake, and J. Cole. It’s no secret what these artists have done and are doing for the music culture as a whole. Lil Wayne is my biggest influence, he’s the one that inspired me to get behind a microphone, after he dropped Tha Carter. That was the first cd I’d ever purchased, I played it until it wouldn’t play anymore. Lil Wayne is how I found Drake and after they dropped the ransom track, I began to back track to his earlier music. It was through Drake’s music that I picked up on expressing my emotions and how relationships & love are apart of everyone’s day to day lives. The same ups and downs I’m experiencing with my family, friends, and women are the same exact things others have gone through or are going through. People love music that they can relate to, give your fans real music that expresses who you are and they’ll develop that same love that I have for music. J Cole is the one I get my conscientious and story telling influence from. He’s another artist who really gives you that music that we as a fan can relate to. The fact that he’s creating those same beats that he’s dropping gems on is insane to me, his artistry is on another level!
What’s next for Spill?
Continuing to perfect my craft, remaining focused on getting better at understanding music on a deeper level. Right now I’m working diligently on a project that I hope to have out by the end of August. It’s a joint project with my brother Rvshvd, who’s also apart of my camp. I have some singles lined up for release, which will give the fans more to choose from and build up my catalog of music. I plan to start getting my feet wet with visuals and performances very soon as well. I realize letting the fans see me is equally as important as making sure my fans hear my music.
