The Charlotte Bobcats have began the process of changing their name back to the Charlotte Hornets.
A source with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports of the move, along with the team’s move to arrange digital assets, which would allow for a change to the original nickname.
No timetable has been announced for the name switch, but ‘vice’ NBA commissioner Adam Silver, told season ticket holders in April that a change could take at least 18 months to implement.
Owner Michael Jordan announced back in February that the team hired a ‘national polling group’ to determine how fans felt about the name change, the poll yielded mix results.
The Charlotte Hornets had held that name from their 1988 birth to their 2002 move to New Orleans where they became the New Orleans Hornets–now Pelicans.
