It’s been a busy week for the ex-UFC champion Cody Garbrandt.
In addition to it being UFC 227 fight week, where he will challenges TJ Dillashaw for the bantamweight title Saturday night at Staples Center, Garbrandt is being taken to task for tweets he posted in 2012 where he says the n-word repeatedly.
Asked about it at UFC 227 media day in Los Angeles on Thursday, Garbrandt shrugged it off to being a teenager.
“I won’t even address that. That was when I was a teenager,” Garbrandt responded. “Anyway, next question.”
According to BloodyElbow.com, Garbrandt was younger than he is now when the tweets were posted but not a teenager as he quipped but at least 21 years old. In more recent years he’s been accused of being racist by social media for calling Aljamain Sterling “boy” to which he responded, he didn’t know “boy” was “politically incorrect” and that he should’ve called him a “little bitch” instead.
In addition to the UFC 227 fight week and the Twitter firestorm, Garbrandt is also being called out by ‘Mighty Mouse’ Demetrious Johnson.
Johnson, who is fighting in the card’s co-feature bout says he definitely wants the winner, of Garbrandt vs Dillashaw, but the UFC has to come up with the right money for the combatants.
“Obviously, if the money’s right. I’ve always had an interest in it. If the money’s right, then we’ll make it happen.”
When BSO caught up with Garbrandt on Monday, he too said he was open to going down in weight and taking the DJ fight if the UFC can come up with the right payday.
Sounds like everyone is on the same page.
