When Canelo Alvarez decided to take his gloves and go home, it left a big spot available on the Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero undercard.
Mares and Ponce De Leon were suppose to fight on April 20th, but when Canelo took that date to fight Austin Trout, they needed a new date and they got one, on the biggest card of the year.
It took only two days for the much-anticipated Daniel Ponce De Leon-Abner Mares featherweight world title fight to find a new home after it was displaced from April 20. The fight landed in the sweetest of all spots on Friday — in the semi-main event position on the Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero Showtime PPV card May 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
Mares doesn’t have fights that aren’t exciting and Ponce De Leon, so expect a very good fight.
