Another upset down under.
Djokovic fell short of his goal of winning a 4th consecutive Australian Open title, after being ousted in 5 sets by Stanislas Wawrinka.
The no. 8 seeded Wawrinka took down the no. 2 seeded Djokovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7 on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals where he will take on Thomas Berdych. This defeat breaks a streak of 14 consecutive Grand Slam semifinals appearances by Djokovic.
The two met in Melbourne last year for a 5 hour plus bout, in which Djokovic came out as victor. This match lasted a lengthy 4 hours, which included a five-minute rain delay with Wawrinka serving at 5-5 in the fifth set.
The defeat is all the more shocking given Djokovic’s very favorable draw, coming in on the opposite side of his biggest rivals Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer.
Wawrinka took to twitter after to share his unique victory celebration to the world
