The details of the July fight between Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr are beginning to emerge and one that’s a little shocking is the weight penalty included for Chavez Jr.
Gennady fights naturally at 160 lbs so making the 168 lb weight limit will be fairly easy for him but for Chavez Jr. it will test his motivation and training. The penalty for coming in over weight has been set at $1 Million, which seems like way too much but GGG is just trying to protect himself in this fight.
Golovkin is already at a size disadvantage and Chavez pushing the limit higher would increase his strength advantage over GGG. Chavez missed the 165 lb 3 times against Brian Vera leading up to their first fight but made the weight easily for their second. IT’s really only a matter of which Chavez Jr. trains for this fight and whether he takes his conditioning seriously enough leading up to the fight.
