Canelo knows that most of his opponents will bend to his will at some point in a fight. The one opponent he knows won’t do that is GGG.
Canelo’s strategy was a pretty simple one.
Outwork GGG and never let him get comfortable. Control the ring, make GGG work off his back foot, and win a decision.
It took GGG about eight rounds to start letting his hands go, but by then, it was too late, even though the scorecards were much closer than most people had it.
Two judges scored it 115-113, while a third had it 116-112 for Alvarez.
BSO scored 117-111 for Canelo.
The final compubox shows that Canelo almost doubled GGG up in power shots.
GGG probably still gives a lot of middleweights and even super middleweights hell, even at 40 years old, but if he wants to take all his millions and retire, he will have a one-way ticket to the boxing Hall of Fame.
Canelo, after the fight, says he is taking a long rest and will be back in the ring in May.
He wants a rematch with Dimitry Bivol if Bivol can beat Gilberto Ramírez, but I think Canelo should forget about Bivol.
It is a fight that no one wants to see if we are being honest.
When you are at Canelo’s level, you can pick and choose who you want to fight, but for the fans, I think the most exciting fight he could have in 2023 is with David Benavidez.
Benavidez is young, in his prime, undefeated, and a legit challenge to Canelo’s supremacy at 168.
I think it will play well in the states, especially during Cinco De Mayo, and could do excellent PPV numbers.
If Canelo wants to venture to light heavyweight again, I think a fight with Artur Beterbiev would be exciting. While Bivol is more of a technical fighter, Beterbiev is a monster, and it would be an all-action fight.
People have also asked for a Charlo fight, but I think we first need to see Charlo at 168 to gauge how competitive that fight would be.
Ultimately, Canelo-GGG 3 ended up what most people expected, but hope didn’t happen.
GGG was a bit out of his prime when they first fought, so expecting him to turn back the clock when he was 40 wasn’t realistic.
