Jamaica is once again trying to bring some heat to the Winter Olympics by building its very own ice hockey team according to a story courtesy the Score via the Jamaican Observer.
This reality has been years in the making after the Caribbean island created the Jamaican Olympic Ice Hockey Federation in 2011. According to the Observer several players who reside abroad with Jamaican connections have already been contacted.
There [are] a significant number of players of Jamaican descent already competing in the Canadian and American Ice Hockey leagues and indicated that several of them have expressed an interest in representing Jamaica in the sport.
Saturday will also be the first day the JOIHF will hold tryouts in Ontario, Canada with hopes of convincing players to suit up for the green, gold, and black.
The JOIHF plans to build an ice rink in Jamaica and to set up a grass-roots programme to recruit and train Jamaicans in the sport. Accordingly a visit to Jamaica is being planned for September to announce in greater detail the plans to build the national effort and encourage the participation of locals in the sport.
