The Jim McElwain era will officially begin after the conclusion of Saturday’s Birmingham Bowl against East Carolina but the new head coach is already taking care of business when it comes to this year’s squad.
Speaking to reporters prior to the Gators final game, McElwain confirmed that Jeff Driskel has been granted his release to transfer.
McElwain will be working with two young quarterbacks during the spring. First-year freshman Treon Harris made his sixth start on Saturday, while redshirt freshman Will Grier will join the mix in March.
McElwain said fourth-year junior Jeff Driskel likely will be moving on.
“I don’t know,” McElwain said of Driskel’s status. “I know he’s asked for his release, and that’s up for him. We all have choices and I’m not going to hold him hostage, certainly.”
