Jeremy Affeldt did a really noble thing back in 2010 when faced with a typographical error on a contract he signed with the San Francisco Giants.
In his book ‘To Stir a Moment’ Affeldt revealed how he and the Giants agreed on a $4 million contract, but once written up the amount on the contract was $4.5 million. Both sides agreed to the terms without noticing the error, after the discovery Affeldt was told that he was entitled to the amount signed for but he still decided to return the extra money.
He went on to explain why he returned it:
I talked to Bobby (Evans) the next day and said, ‘I can’t take that money,’ ‘I won’t sleep well at night knowing I took that money because every time I open my paycheck I’ll know it’s not right.’
Karma paid off for the reliever though, as he has since signed an $18 million 3 year deal.
