Jim Kelly Didn’t Want Cancer Struggles on Social Media

Jim Kelly’s health was very much out in the public eye, although this was against his wishes as he later informs Yahoo.

Cancer is a terrible disease that affects your surroundings as well as the person who is physically fighting this. Jim Kelly is a prime example of someone who lived in the public eye because of his football career and then came back because of his disease. His wife and daughter are his rock and gave him all the support he needed. But, as Jim Kelly informs Yahoo, he didn’t want this out in the public eye.

“I’m a very private person, and I didn’t want my wife and daughter going to social media and advertising what was happening,” Jim Kelly said in a phone interview with Yahoo! Sports. “But [Jill] told me, ‘You need as many prayers as you can get. And you can be an inspiration and share the never-give-up attitude you’ve always had and change their thoughts on life and how their faith can get them through any tough circumstance.'”

Erin has fought with Twitter trolls and she speaks about this exchange in the book.

It must’ve been tough to even convince him to let this book be made. “Kelly Tough” is now on sale.

Report: Jim Kelly Joins Group Trying To Buy Bills

Former Buffalo Bills legend and Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has joined a group trying to purchase the franchise according to the Buffalo News.

Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports Kelly joined forces with one of the eight bidders for the Bills franchise. Graham doesn’t specifically name which bidder, though he previously reported Kelly was approached by Jeffery Gundlach, a bond investor from East Amherst.

Per Graham, the Bills are making “in-home” visits with “as many as eight” potential buyers in the coming weeks.

Initially it was believed three bidders were in on the team; rocker/businessman Bon Jovi, billionaire hairpiece Donald Trump and Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula. Those three submitted bids by the July 29 deadline, but apparently the race isn’t quite so cut and dry.

It is a competitive race, though. Bon Jovi’s group was reportedly asked to resubmit their “uncompetitively low” bid of around $900 million; it’s believed the Bills will certainly fetch north of $1 billion.

Kelly who is fighting a heroic battle against cancer, would prefer to keep the Bills in Buffalo.

There’s no better victory won than that of beating cancer. Former Bills QB Jim Kelly is well on the road to this victory, and today he won another battle in the war. 8 days after completing chemotherapy, Kelly was happy to announce that he was officially done with radiation treatment of his reoccurrence of sinus cancer. Kelly walked out of the hospital and was greeted by a swarm of cheering friends, family and fans.

“Thank you guys,” he said, according to Bills.com. “I know I could not have done this without family and friends and you guys have been here since day one,” said Kelly. “I have a long way to go but I know with you people on my team I’ll be here for many many more years and many more parties and gatherings, so thank you.”

Although Kelly never won a Super Bowl for the franchise, he took his team to four big games, and it’s great to see the city stand strong behind him in this fight. He is currently also part of a group that is bidding on the Buffalo Bills team in order to keep the organization in the city of Buffalo.

Jim Kelly will continue his fight with cancer from back home.

According to the official Bills website, the Hall of Fame QB returned to Western New York, through the Prior Aviation hub in Cheektowaga, NY, a Buffalo suburb, and he will not be returning to New York City to resume his batter with oral cancer.

His brother, Dan Kelly, spoke to the media, gathered at the airport to greet them:

“Jim is coming back, and he wants to fight cancer here in Buffalo. He’ll be continuing all his treatments here in Buffalo.”

The Bills confirmed the news via their twitter account:

According to the Associated Press, Kelly is scheduled for two more rounds of chemotherapy. He is said to be receiving radiation treatments five times a week. As always, we  send our prayers and wishes to Kelly and his family, as they continue to handle a very difficult situation on the most public of stages.

Former Bills QB Jim Kelly Announces He’s Cancer Free

Former Buffalo Bills and Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has announced that he is now cancer free.  Kelly announced on June 3rd that he had cancer of upper jaw bone.

“I found out great news on Wednesday,” Kelly said Monday at the opening of his 26th annual Jim Kelly Football Camp. “I don’t have to go through radiation treatment and chemo, which is a blessing. From what I’ve been told everything that they did in surgery, if I had to do radiation or chemo it would put me way back.”

Kelly reportedly had the left side of his jaw removed in surgery earlier this month along with all the teeth on the left side of his mouth, and several in front.

To replace what was removed Kelly had a skin graft performed where tissue was harvested from his left leg to be used in his mouth.

Kelly admitted the pain from cancer surgery was the most intense he’s ever felt.

“The worst part about my cancer is it’s right here in the area of my mouth,” said Kelly. “They had to remove most of my jaw on my left side. It’s very, very sore, but it takes time. I know when you have knee surgery or shoulder surgery it’s sore for a small period of time and rehab and everything is good and you just take your time. This is just constant pain for now, but it’s a small price to pay for where I’ll be later on down the road.”

A cancer free Jim Kelly is definitely great news.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Jim Kelly and his family. Here is the statement he made courtesy of Buffalobills.com

“This past couple of weeks has been difficult for me and because of the nature of social media I thought it would be best to share with everyone what has been going on with my health. I was recently diagnosed with Squamous-cell carcinoma (cancer) of the upper jaw bone. I have undergone tests which have shown that the cancer is isolated to my upper jaw and has not spread to other parts of my body. Surgery is scheduled for June 7th and doctors have told me that the prognosis for my recovery is very good.

With the excellent medical care that I will be receiving and the loving care of my wife Jill and my daughters Erin and Camryn and the support of my entire family and friends, I am extremely confident in my road to recovery. I plan to tackle this challenge head on, as we Kelly’s always do, with toughness, perseverance and faith.

I want to thank everyone who has offered their prayers and would appreciate any prayers said for me and my family moving forward. May God continue to bless you and our family.”
