Julio Cesar Chavez has been in talks with Bob Arum and Top Rank Boxing regarding a June fight against Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin but the talks have seemed to have slowed due to reports that have JCC talking to boxing advisor Al Haymon.
Nearly all of Haymon’s fighters fight for Showtime Boxing, which would seriously put the proposed June fight in jeopardy. The alleged offer from Haymon to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is a multiyear $47 million contract.
Top Rank can ill afford to lose one of their only young PPV options; especially to their #1 rival. Chavez has been a free agent since September according to Fighthype.com’s Ben Thompson.
“Sources close to the information have informed us that former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is strongly considering parting ways with his long-time promoter, Bob Arum, and Top Rank. According to one source, Chavez’s unanimous decision victory over Bryan Vera on September 28 was the final bout on his contract,” said Thompson.
This would give Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime boxing the strongest crop of young fighters assuming that both Canelo and Broner win their next fights. This could also set up a meeting between Canelo and Chavez Jr. in the fall.
