New York Knicks fans are renowned for their innate and sometimes over the top passion for the team. And that type of fandom is admirable, up until the point where that passion leaks over into the realm of ignorance, hate, and stupidity.
According to a disturbing story courtesy Joe Coscarelli of NYMag.com, a Brooklyn couple were walking near Madison Square Garden, around same time of the completion of the Knicks Game 1 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday, when they were attacked by some drunk and angry fans.
“A group of Knicks fans were upset about the game and they just decided to ‘fag bash’ the two of us. They broke my nose and his wrist, and broke several hundreds of dollars worth of personal property,” victim Kevin Porto, a clothing designer, wrote on Facebook. “They called us faggots,” he told DNAinfo. “They made fun of my jeans — I made the jeans myself, for that day.”
The police are investigating the incident and are said to be looking for a suspect wearing a Carmelo Anthony jersey (yea I know, really narrows it down).
Disgusting incidents like this, are why so many people are afraid to reveal their sexuality, simply because it takes just one ignorant and hateful person to commit an act of violence that will feed their worst fears. No one deserves to live a life where they are constantly looking over their shoulders, especially in a self-proclaimed, progressive society like ours.
