The Los Angeles Lakers are not happy with the officiating when it comes to LeBron James and his lack of trips to the free-throw line. Following their narrow 108-107 loss to the Miami Heat, the Lakers have reportedly filed a formal complaint with the NBA league office. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin broke the news, revealing that the Lakers cited “numerous missed foul calls,” with a particular emphasis on perceived missed calls against James.
Lakers Lodge Complaint with NBA Over LeBron James’ Scant Free Throws Versus Heat
According to the report, the Lakers presented multiple video clips from the game to support their claim of clear illegal contact against James that went uncalled. In the game, James managed to score 30 points, but he only had four successful free-throw attempts. In contrast, the Heat as a team went to the line 16 times, converting on 14 of those attempts. The Lakers were called for 17 fouls while the Heat were whistled for 14.
James himself voiced his frustration with one specific missed call after the game. He described an incident where he attempted a dunk against Thomas Bryant, and Bryant’s elbow made contact with his face. Despite the obvious infraction, James claimed that the referees’ explanation did not align with what he witnessed on the court. “What they’re telling me is not consistent with what’s actually happening on the floor,” said James.
The Lakers’ complaint stems from their belief that Bryant’s actions should have warranted a personal foul or possibly even a flagrant 1 foul. The lack of a call not only left James visibly upset but also led to Lakers’ head coach Darvin Ham protesting the officiating, resulting in a technical foul against him.
Ham expressed his frustration with the situation, pointing out the numerous times James attacked the rim and was slapped on the arm without any calls being made. He emphasized that James was not exaggerating or flopping; he was simply playing aggressively.
The Lakers’ decision to file a complaint with the league office showcases their concern for fair and consistent officiating. They argue that the missed foul calls against James affected the outcome of the game and hope that the NBA will address the issue appropriately. The league office will review the complaint and determine if any action needs to be taken.
