Becky Hammon has broken the ice and for all the females who will follow. She is the first female to land a coaching position on a NBA team. So far the responds has been great for Hammon but who is next in line to follow her path?
Former 3-time WNBA MVP Lisa Leslie thinks she should be next in line. Leslie has a host of basketball accolades. She is a 12-time All-Star, 4 time gold medal winner and now aHall of Famer. Leslie was a guess on Larry King Live and when asked about coaching in the NBA, she had a few words to show she has her eyes on Doc Rivers and the Los Angeles Clippers.
“I could coach. I haven’t had the desire to coach because I have little kids but I would never say never. That’s definitely something I’m totally capable of doing in the NBA … I definitely think I have the knowledge of the game that would definitely help their (Clippers) post game, post players, footwork, and how to defend offensively and defensively. For sure, I could help that team immediately.”
I don’t doubt Leslie at all, she has the smarts and experience to coach at the NBA level. I just wonder if her word choice comes off as a slap in the face of the current coaching staff. Nothing wrong with believing in yourself but to say she definitely could help the Clippers immediately comes off as a little aggressive and cocky to me. I would love to see the Clippers give Leslie the opportunity to coach in the NBA. If a person fits the build, they should be allowed and welcomed on the staff no matter if they are man or women.
