In case you’ve been wondering just why the Mariners have spent the last decade or so wasting away in the AL West, this kinda sums things up.
After the Mariners successfully managed to scoop up Robinson Cano in a blockbuster 10-year $240 million pickup, lost in the details were how the Mariners accidentally upped their offer after getting into a bidding war with themselves.
As reported by the Dallas Morning News via Deadspin:
By mid-day Friday, Seattle had heard that some team bid nine years and $225 million for Robinson Cano, so the Mariners upped their bid to $240 million and 10 years before apparently realizing the initial bid had come from themselves, too.
This ‘oh so mysterious’ silent bidder who too, was vying for Mr. Cano’s services ended up being the Mariners themselves. It almost seems to funny to be true.
Cano of course will be laughing to the bank at the Mariner’s silly mistake, which netted him $15 million more. The Mariners haven’t outright confirmed the report, so this may go down as one of the greatest tales in Baseball lore history.
Oh, Mariners…
