He may have been joking, but Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis put some undue pressure on himself with a possible joke about winning the Super Bowl.
The Cincinnati Enquirer opened their Bengals camp coverage with a quote from the coach that is sure to raise some eyebrows.
“I want to hand Mike the trophy, then just walk away,” Lewis said. “It would be the most tremendous feeling,’’ Lewis also said of handing the trophy to Mike Brown, invoking memories of telling Brian Bullock the same in regard to Art Modell in 1999.
I don’t know if Lewis was talking about walking off the podium or retiring from the game of football. Keep in mind — the Bengals haven’t won a playoff game since 1990.
Lewis has guided the Bengals since 2003, and they are laughing stocks no more because of him, but if he gets to taste one, I don’t think he’ll be walking away.
