Rodney Dangerfield did a movie back in 1986 called Back to School (yes it’s on Netflix) and now Gary Fryer from Arkansas is doing it in real life. Fryer dropped out of Arkansas Tech University in the 1960s, and now he’s back and has joined a fraternity. Here are more details from Daily Mail:
70-year-old university dropout has joined a fraternity after returning to school and wanting the full college experience.
Gary Fryer became the latest pledge of the Kappa Sigma chapter at Arkansas Tech University after rushing in the fall semester of 2016.
The former furniture salesman originally dropped out of the university in the 1960s and went through the bid process like any other freshman, attending mixers and receiving a ‘big brother’.
Despite a nearly half a century age difference, Fryer said he feels a strong connection with the young men and is actively involved in the organization.
He said to Arkansas Tech University: ‘I have a group of young men who aren’t afraid to pat me on the back or hug me around the shoulder.
‘They told me they thought it would be great having me in there because I may have experience and be able to give them advice.
He re-enrolled at the university for the fall 2016 semester after graduating and transferring from the University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton.
The elderly man decided to pledge the frat when he was attending an activities involvement fair and came across Kappa Sigma’s booth, where the president told him to rush.
Fryer said the idea was ‘the craziest thing [he] had ever heard’ but now his involvement in the organization has kept him going, he said to THV11.
He added: ‘I have a big brother and he’s 49 years younger than me.
‘I’ve had a lot of fun with the youngsters here and they just treat me great.’
Fryer’s connection to Kappa Sigma stems back to several family members and friends who were a part of the fraternity.
His older brother Jack, who died in 2015, was a member of the organization and brought Fryer along to events while he was still a junior in high school.
Fryer appears not to be married or have children. He said he hopes to become a teacher when he finishes his schooling.
