Sometimes you have to filter through the BS to find the point of someone’s statement. So, let’s take this step by step with Former Auburn Coach Pat Dye on Condoleezza Rice being named to the College Football Playoff Committee.
“All she knows about football is what somebody told her,” Dye said. “Or what she read in a book, or what she saw on television. To understand football, you’ve got to play with your hand in the dirt.”
“I love Condoleezza Rice and she’s probably a good statesman and all of that but how in the hell does she know what it’s like out there when you can’t get your breath and it’s 110 degrees and the coach asks you to go some more?”
That is stupid and sexiest. You don’t have to have played football to understand it. Doesn’t matter if you are a man or woman. Lot of excellent coaches never played football. A lot of excellent journalists never played football. This is just an old man, who is set in his ways. I don’t question Condoleezza Rice’s knowledge of football, I am sure she understands the game better than most.
Dye also said that the he feels addition of Rice to the committee could make the selection process less about Xs and Os and more about personal relationships.
“That goes back to politics. Which one she likes the best. Which one’s the smoothest talker. The game is played on the field.”
I partly agree with this, the committee shouldn’t be made up of people who aren’t directly involved in College Football on a daily basis. Also anyone with direct ties to a University, should be immediately eliminated.
The people who should be choosing these playoffs teams need to live and breath college football. No former politicians, boosters or informed fans.
Doesn’t matter if you played or not, but bringing in outside high profile people (man or woman) will always be an issue in my opinion
