Kid Rock was once beloved in his hometown of Detroit, but now the choice of controversial musician as the opening act for a new $860 million, 20,000-seat sports arena has now become the subject of protest after he embraced the confederate flag, crushed Colin Kaepernick and never wavered in his support of President Donald Trump.
A group led by the Michigan chapter of Al Sharpton’s National Action Network is set to protest Kid Rock’s upcoming concerts at Little Caesars Arena on Sept. 12 in front of Kid Rock’s “Made in Detroit” restaurant on Woodward Avenue according to MLive.
“Kid Rock is the tip of the ugly iceberg of white supremacy and is an insult to Detroit, America’s blackest and poorest city, to bring that punk in here,” said Sam Riddle, the group’s political director, at a Wednesday press conference.
“He’s wrong for bearing that confederate flag and he’s wrong for … not even apologizing for the use of the confederate flag,” Rev. Charles Williams II, president of the Michigan National Action Network.
Rock will be the first act to perform at the new arena, a quarter of it — $280 million — funded by taxpayer dollars.
