Twenty months ago EA Sports took on the task of revamping the UFC video game franchise. With only a month until it’s release I’ll be the first to say that they’ve accomplished their goal.
Building off of many of the dynamics that made their ‘Fight Night’ franchise so successful EA Sports has taken MMA to an unprecedented level. I had the opportunity to attend a private EA Sports before UFC 173 that allowed me to test out the final version of ‘EA Sports UFC.’
The first thing that jumped out to me was the home screen. The menu looks very similar to what you’d see in Madden or Fifa. It has quick play options, online modes, and even an extremely deep career mode.
The aspect that sets ‘EA Sports UFC’ apart from every other fighting game before it is the entrances. The detail and specifications for each fighter’s entrance will instantly give players the feeling of watching a UFC PPV. Whether it was Jon Jones’ one handed cartwheel or Ronda Rousey’s hoodie and death stare; they’re all part of the game.
As far as gameplay is concerned the striking will feel familiar to Fight Night but the added controls for grappling add the extra dynamic that is exclusive to MMA. The grappling mechanics will turn even the most casual fans into fans of Jiu Jitsu. Every aspect of game play is focused on realism.
This game takes parts from some of the greatest combat video games of all time and puts them together in a way that has never been seen before. ‘EA Sports UFC’ is a must buy game for all video game fans, not just the ones that follow MMA.
