In 2018, only a fool would suggest that a TV celebrity could not win a major U.S. election—especially, a celebrity from a show that we all actually enjoyed watching…
Cynthia Nixon is famously known for her portrayal of Miranda in HBO’s critically acclaimed series, Sex in the City, and yesterday, she officially announced her intentions to run for Governor of New York.
Nixon’s opponent will be current New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo—who is the clear favorite to win his September primary.
You might recognize Gov. Cuomo’s last name, and yes, Gov. Cuomo is the brother of CNN’s morning anchor, Chris Cuomo, who LaVar Ball famously referred to as “Chris Cro-mo” in jest.
Now, less than 4% of incumbent governors running for re-election have lost their primaries since 1970, and Cuomo currently has a 66% to 19% lead over Nixon.
Still, Nixon has one wildcard that Gov. Cuomo has not really had to deal with in his past elections: “name recognition.”
In addition, Nixon will likely have the support of New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, as she campaigned heavily alongside de Blasio in 2013, on his behalf. Mayor de Blasio has been married to Chirlane Irene McCray, a black woman, since 1994, and has generally polled well with minorities throughout his career.
Likewise, Mayor de Blasio and Gov. Cuomo have not seen eye-to-eye in years. Their dirty laundry has been out here in these streets for quite some time.
Plus, liberals are no strangers to switching up teams for a hot new progressive. Look no further than 2016, where we saw Bernie Sanders close a similar gap between himself and Hillary Clinton. At the start of that race, Clinton was the clear favorite. By voting time, Sanders and Clinton were virtually tied.
So if you’re one of those people that thinks that one of the main character of Sex in the City can actually become Governor of New York, you’re not crazy.
Gov. Cuomo better not sleep on Miranda because this wouldn’t even be the most surprising thing we’ve seen in politics since 2018…
