After her son was murdered last year, Marcia went through a grocery list of tasks following his death including canceling credit cards and other assorted bills that were in her son’s name following his burial. It wasn’t until she tackled the task of making arrangements for student loan forgiveness that a new nightmare unfolded.
In an interview with the Miami Herald, DeOliveira-Longinetti says she was able to have her son’s federal loans forgiven but was given another response by the State of New Jersey.
“Please accept our condolences on your loss,” a letter from that agency, the Higher Education Student Assistance Authority, said. “After careful consideration of the information you provided, the authority has determined that your request does not meet the threshold for loan forgiveness. Monthly bill statements will continue to be sent to you.”
Since DeOliveira-Longinetti co-signed her son’s loans, she is now on the hook for the balance. To date she’s made 18 payments to the state at $180 per month. Currently she has about 92 to go or roughly 8 years of payments.
With all the ridiculous petitions that are started on a daily business, it would be nice to see a petition started on her behalf to put this nightmare behind her.
