Straight Outta Compton crushed at the box office this weekend, but some fans came away confused and upset over the inaccuracies in the film.
Most surrounded the wardrobe that group members wore during that period of time.
Costume designer Kelli Jones who, with heavy involvement and consultation from Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, helped shape the look of the groups cinematic debut.
There was some conflict though, with sports personalities pointing out that Jones had Eazy E’s character rocking a Chicago White Sox hat that has the Old English lettering style that we associate with the White Sox of today.
Eazy is seen wearing that hat in a scene that takes place in 1986, even though the hat didn’t drop until 1991. Jones defended the move, and said she did that on purpose.
“The whole thing, the whole look, it needed to be such a strong scene to help set up the movie. So the Kings’ hat has the ‘Kings’ all across it,” notes Jones. “So, [F.] Gary [Gray] and everyone just wanted a hat that had a little pop of something, and I think that when you look at the frame—that frame is so close on Jason [Mitchell]—that’s such a large font to have there.”
Jones says she made sure that Ice Cube had the proper Raiders cap, Dre had the proper Dodgers and Eazy with the White Sox.
