Bad news for the Yankees and their hurt young pitcher Ivan Nova.
Anytime one of the rare young Yankees starters gets hurt it’s particularly crushing news, that news is made all the worst when talks of Tommy John surgery start to circulate.
The Yankees have announced that Tommy John surgery has been “recommended” for the 27-year-old Nova. A second diagnosis confirmed the initial diagnosis of a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
The injury occurred in Saturday’s game versus the Tampa Bay Rays, when Nova left with soreness in his elbow. He’s been placed on the 15-day DL . Tommy Johns would require a 12-18 month rehab stint, which would end his season and take him out of the start of new year’s.
The otherwise promising Nova did not begin the 2014 season on a high note posting a 2-2 record with a gruesome 8.27 ERA.
