Weed should be legal everywhere, but if you know you are going to get drug tested you can not do this.
Not with the Olympics so close.
American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson has tested positive for cannabis, sources told Reuters on Thursday, and she is unlikely to get the chance to challenge for the Olympic 100-meter title in Tokyo later this month.
One source familiar with the matter told Reuters the positive test came at the U.S. Olympic trials last month where Richardson established herself as a gold medal contender by winning the 100 meters in 10.86 seconds.
A positive test during the trials would mean all of Richardson’s results from the meet would be wiped out, voiding her victory in the 100-meter final.
The problem Richardson has is all her wins from the trials would be vacated and therefore she wouldn’t be allowed to run in Olympics.
Obviously, weed doesn’t help you in track, but it is a known banned substance.
Richardson had been dealing with the death of his biological mother who she didn’t really have a relationship with.
Earlier in the day, Richardson tweeted “I am Human”, so she knew what was coming.
People have brought up Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte as examples of Olympic athletes who have done bad things but are still celebrated.
The difference is Phelps wrongdoings happened either right after the Olympics or well before the Olympics. Lochte did his dirt during the Olympics and was punished afterward.
So, while it makes no sense for weed to be considered a performance-enhancing drug, you have to be aware that it is. Also when you are black and very good, you have to know you are going to be tested often.
I hope they make an exception for Richardson, but if they do, then they will need to change the rules for everyone who smokes.
Twitter is on fire speaking about this and they aren’t pleased.
