This is an exciting time for football fans as the opening weekend of Training camp has come and gone. For the first time in quite some time, there are more first round picks in camp and actually practicing instead of dealing with contracts. Unfortunately, this weekend of training camp has come with some injuries. Although injuries are devastating this time of the year as players are learning new schemes and plays, none of the injuries appear to have anyone missing any time once the regular season starts.
Some of the more significant injuries that took place over the opening weekend (these injuries do NOT include injuries that occurred during OTA’s or for players that were training on their own).
Dallas Cowboys – Rookie standout WR Dez Bryant suffered a “high ankle sprain” after having his ankle landed on during practice and looks like he will be out 4-6 weeks, however Bryant is eying a possible return for the Cowboys’ last pre-season game per ProFootballTalk.com and ESPN’S Calvin Watkins.
Green Bay Packers – Strong safety Atari Bigby slightly injured an ankle while conducting conditioning drills. Bigby went on to say:
“It wasn’t an issue, not what it is now,” he said. “But I worked out in the off-season, I got in shape, I came back in shape so, no, it wasn’t something that bothered me in the off-season. So I think it’s one of those, it just flared . I guess twisted it a certain way that it shouldn’t have been . . up twisted. “I went out running last week just testing out for the conditioning test. Of course, I didn’t do as much as the test, but I felt pretty good.”
Philadelphia Eagles – RB Mike Bell and CB Asante Samuel were both carted off the field with hamstring injuries. Samuel went out to say:
“I’m not a mad scientist, I might be out there tomorrow.”
DeSean Jackson was carted off the field with a back injury but was later seen walking out of the facility and driving off.
Washington Redskins – WR Malcolm Kelly pulled a hamstring and no timetable as to his return
Cleveland Browns – Rookie RB Montario Hardesty will be out a “few weeks” according to head coach Eric Mangini with a knee strain.
Denver Broncos – RB’s Correll Buckhalter and Knowshown Moreno both suffered injuries that required being carted off the field. Buckhalter’s injury was described a “back injury” that required him to go to the local hospital but was later released. Knowshon Moreno, who was earlier feared to have torn a hamstring in practice Sunday, is now being reported that after further tests, there is no tear to the hamstring.
From Josina Anderson’s Twitter page, the injury wasn’t as severe as first reported. Mike Klis of the Denver Post further reports that Buckhalter will be out a week and Moreno will be out about 3 weeks. Hopefully Moreno won’t be out too long and can get back on the field to help the Broncos running game. If not, maybe Tebow will move to the backfield and reiterate his promise to a new set of fans.
