It looks like Tyron Smith will be leaving Dallas after 13 seasons of defending Cowboys quarterbacks. Smith will hit free agency and is not expected to play for the Cowboys again, according to a source cited by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on Saturday. On March 13, the start of the new league year, the seasoned Cowboys left tackle will formally become a free agent.
Since being chosen in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Smith—who will have the longest contract on the team going into the 2023 campaign—has worn a Cowboys uniform his whole career.
Journey of Tyron Smith with Cowboys
One of the top tackles in the game, Smith spent 13 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He was selected to eight Pro Bowls, including seven in a row from 2013 to 2019, and he was twice voted to the First Team All-Pro. He was added to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-2010s squad in recognition of his achievements.
Recent years have seen him sidelined by injuries, missing nearly the whole 2020 and 2022 season. However, Smith earned a spot on the second team All-Pro roster last season despite starting 13 games and giving up just one sack on 847 offensive snaps, earning him an 83.8 player grade according to PFF.
Now, whether through the draft, free agency, or current players on the roster, the Cowboys will be looking for a new blindside protector to keep Dak Prescott upright for the first time in over a dozen years.
Additionally, Smith will be looking for a new team for the first time in his career at the age of 33.
