Believe it or not, there are times when soccer players actually do get injured. Witness what happened to Uruguay midfielder Alvaro Pereira during their 2-1 win over England in Group D action. Pereira’s head was on the wrong end of a Raheem Sterling knee, and the inadvertent blow left Pereira motionless on the pitch.
Amazingly Pereira got to his feet, wobbled to the sidelines, and somehow managed to convince team officials to let him stay in the game. Probably not the smartest move in the book, considering the seriousness of head injuries in sports, but I doubt anyone on the Uruguay sidelines was going to talk Pereira out of playing on. Hopefully the only thing Pereira ends up suffering from is one nasty headache, a seemingly small price to pay for such a much needed victory.
