For the first time in my life I sat and watch an entire game of soccer. I didn’t miss one minute of the 210-minute Women’s World Cup final that Japan won, beating the USA on penalty kicks.
The game was exciting and intense, it had a lot of drama and the end result was definitely unexpected. And all the excitement from the game ran over to Twitter.
The exciting climax drew 7,196 tweets per second, according to Twitter. Paraguay’s penalty shootout win over Brazil in a Copa America quarterfinal later the same day came close to beating it with 7,166.
The previous record of 6,939 was set just after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Day. Other spikes include bin Laden’s death (5,106 per second) and the Super Bowl in February (4,064).
Not surprised that WWC broke the record. I was tweeting game updates as well and when the game ended I thought Twitter went over capacity because some of my tweets took forever to post.
The Final was more than just a game. It some great storylines to it, including Japan’s passion to bring home a victory to a nation that is still recovering from a devastating earthquake and tsunami.
I’m not much of a soccer fan but this game definitely held my attention more than the NBA Finals did and it obviously did the same for the world.
