For those who have no idea what I mean by "Ref Assignment" I will explain it to you. If you go on NBA.com the night before a game, particularly in the playoffs, you know which refs will work that particular game. Then those who usually take the odds in Vegas know who to side with.
If a "Joey Crawford" is going to work a Spurs game, the Spurs won't get the calls and may end up losing the game. It happened against the Hornets as well as the Lakers. The disturbing part of all this is, "Since when are the refs a part of the game?" They are supposed to be unbiased spectators of the sport, making sure the game is not shady. But today in the NBA everything is shady. Many thought it was shady for the Celtics to get KG and Ray Allen and the Lakers to get Pau Gasol out of Kwame Brown. And both teams are vying for the Larry O'Brien trophy.
Many scream "conspiracy." Perhaps Stern wanted this matchup to boost what would've been dismal ratings for the Spurs against anybody. Yet the referee scandal still lingers and no matter who ends up victorious, many will wonder if it was scripted or not. Did the best team really win? After all, how else to explain why Dick Bavetta, who is currently under investigation for this referee scandal, is still officiating a Game 5 of the NBA Finals? As I said, it does not matter which team wins the championship. The fans end up on the losing end wondering whether what they are seeing is real or scripted.
