Not the Boston Red Sox! They wanted to trade Manny Ramirez so badly they sent him and $7 million to the Dodgers. And, Craig Hansen and Brandon Moss went to the Pirates. All they got in return was Jason Bay, a two-piece snack with a biscuit, no cole slaw and not even a cup of water!
Manny's annoying but that annoying? The Boston Red Sox have effectively closed the books on their postseason. There is no way they're getting deep in the playoffs without Ramirez protecting Ortiz! The Yankees can walk Papi now with impunity! What are the Red Sox going to do? Threaten them with Jason Bay?
Don't get me wrong. Bay is having a great year! Actually he's having a better year statiscally than Manny is. But come postseason I don't see the Yankees, Rays, or Angels' even remotely fearing the idea of pitching to Bay straight up.
But that's not the only head scratching trade today.
The Chicago White Sox just got another bat with the addition of Ken Griffey Jr. The man with probably the best batting stance in all of baseball ok'd a trade to the White Sox this morning and the Reds gave him away for Nick Masset and David Richar? Forgive me for being surprised, but I've never heard of either of these guys and I follow White Sox baseball! Richar pitched one game for the White Sox and Masset is at AAA Charlotte.
Let's see, 600 homeruns for Griffey, don't you think he's worth more than two minor leaguers? But unlike Manny and the Red Sox, the Reds and White Sox are splitting Griffey's salary fairly and the White Sox are NOT obligated to pick up Griffey's option next year for $16 million.
The only winner I see here is Griffey. He gets to play for a real contender! Granted, the White Sox didn't dip into the slush fund to get Griffey! They can move Swisher from center field to first base and move Konerko to the bench. It would seem they'll have a nice lineup with league homerun leader Carlos Quentin and Jermaine Dye in the outfield and Nick Swisher's clutch hitting as well. The White Sox win here as well.
Now the Yankees went from okay to contender today! Try on Pudge Rodriguez, Xavier Nady, and Damaso Marte. Good catcher to relieve Posada, great right handed bat in Nady, and a nice relief pitcher in Marte. I'm thinking the Yankees just passed the Red Sox here!
Let's not forget the Angels! Tuesday they went from the best team in baseball to whatever the next step up from best is. Mark Teixeira adds the offense the Angels greatly need to go with their awesome pitching staff. Just in case you didn't know, the Angels have a 11-1/2 game lead in their division and with the addition of Teixeira, effectively close the door on any ideas the other teams in their division had on catching them.
There were several lower level trades today along with several last week. But the trades I've pointed out were the ones that actually shifted the balance of power in the league.

I like Manny going to LA. I am not a big fan of Griffey in Chicago because he won't be able to deal with the press
