The general consensus going into the NLDS between the Phillies and the Brewers was that the only chance the Brew-Crew had was with Sabathia on the mound, in his bag, dominating. If Milwalkee was to win the series CC had to give them two wins. Going into Thursday evening game with a matchup between Brett Myers and Sabathia would be a no brainer favoring the Brewers. Brett Myers had struggled his past two starts and Sabathia had been dropping gems every 3 days as if he has an iron arm.
If I told you that a pitcher would pitch a two hit master piece and give the other pitcher work at the plate you'd bet the house it was Sabathia. Well Myers did his best CC Sabathia impression in a must-win game against the most dominant force in baseball. He only gave up 1 run in the first inning, somehow getting himself out of a bases loaded 1 out jam. Good pitchers always find a way to minimize the damage a la CC Sabathia. With the game tied 1-1 Myers gave Sabathia the most important bat of the game. Fouling off several pitches, somehow laying off pitches some of the best hitters in the game would have swung at. He ended up drawing a two out walk, in a at-bat that wore CC out and invigorated the fanatics in the stands. After Myers walked, Rollins walked on four pitches, CC lost his cool and Shane the "Flyin Hawaiian" Victorino hit a Grand Slam over the left-field seats. Game. Set. Match. Phillies win 5-2 and the Brewers are on the brink. If Myers doesn't get that double- play ball in the first inning or make CC throw 19 pitches to him batting out of the pitchers spot, it's a different ball game. We might be still billing the Brewers Ace as "CC Gibson-Gooden-Ryan-Carlton-Young Sabathia!" CC is still the most dominant pitcher in the game, and has done more than his part for Milwalkee. My question is... are the Brewers batting with whiffle ball bats or what?
You have to love the importance of every moment in playoff baseball. Every pitch, error, fielding misjudgment, managerial decision can potentially decide the game at that particular moment. You can cut the tension of October baseball with a knife.
Baseball is still a great game.
