For The Cubs Curse Is Alive and Well

Coming into the postseason it was a foregone conclusion that the Chicago Cubs would easily represent the National League in the World Series. Finally the team that plays in the old friendly confines would be blessed by the baseball gods and exercise the decades and decades of demons.

So of course the Chicago Cubs on down 0-2 to the Joe Torre's and Manny Ramirez's LA Dodgers in the best of 5 series and face the possibility of being swept. Forget the fact that the Cubs on paper on the most well rounded, complete team in the majors. Forget about how they won 97 games and probably could have won 100 games if they had anything to play for down the stretch. Obviously their home dominance all season has proved to be meaning-less.

How does this Cubs team get spanked in the first two games against a inferior team and not even look like they were ever close to winning either game? All I can say is The Curse is killing this team ladies and gents. It's almost as if Ghost were slowing down the bats of the Cubs left handed hitters in that first game. It looked like something super natural was involved in the second game how bad the infielders were booting those routine ground balls. Look we can say that LA is a hot team, won 19 games in September and Manny Ramirez is the man etc. But understand this is about the Cubs.

Whether you believe in the idea of a team being cursed or not is up to you(By the way, many Chicago fans do believe this). One thing that is apparent to me is the fact that the pressure of the situation is killing this team. Some people don't like to believe that pressure actually gets to players and factors in to performance. As a guy who played sports through-out high school and summer league basketball now, I can't tell you how many times i have seen pressure kill situations before squads even took the playing field.

The Cubs played probably their worst two games of the season in these first two playoff games. These guys couldn't even make rountine plays. Looked like a totally, totally different team from the team I seen during the regular season. The enormity of the cloud that's been hovering over this franchise, a ugly snowball that has been rolling for decades has this team tighter than your grandma's pocketbook. You can feel it building and gaining momentum this entire season, as everyone thought is this the year the Cubs are going to make it over the hump? So as the playoffs started, the entire town is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Preist are blessing the team, everyone is on edge, talking about the curse and fans are ready to emotional explode one way or the other. Add all of this up and this team never had a chance.

This is in part a self-inflicted hurdle this town has put on itself and i'm not sure when they will ever get over it. There is no reason why this team shouldn't be able to make it to the NLCS. But they can't just relax and play because the past in a funny way just won't allow them. For the poor Cubs fans, well it's almost like when you were a teenager and had a girl you've been trying to get with down in your parents basement and just as you got to 3rd base your little brother interrupts (blew up the spot).

Look on the bright side Cubs fans, unless Big Brother pulls the chair from under us the next President of the United States will be Chicago's own.
