BCS Realism, and Outrage

I actually held out for a while this year. because we all know by now that the same thing happens every year with the BCS. Once we get about nine or ten games in, we see a bunch of teams with one loss and start speculating on how many different ways people are going to get screwed out of the title game. Some people actually take joy in the possibility that several teams might finish with the same record, praying every year for that final BCS apocalypse, where two teams with one loss, neither or which actually won their respective conference, play each other for the title while six other teams with one loss each get relegated to the other BCS bowls. If only that could happen just once, these people think, then the people behind the BCS would finally get enough complaints from coaches/college presidents/conference presidents to shut the whole thing down and go to a playoff system. Well before I get to the thing that has finally gotten me upset this year, let me throw some cold water on all the people hoping that two teams from the Big 12 finish 11-1, and that one of them loses the Big 12 title game to a 10-2 Missouri team while Florida finishes 10-2 but wins the SEC title game over Alabama, leaving two 11-1 teams that lost in their conference title games end up playing for the National Championship. Or for the alternate scenario where the Big 12 teams and SEC cannibalize each other and we end up with Penn State playing USC for the title.

Sorry folks, but if either of those thing happen it won't matter. There will still be a BCS next year. You know why? Because all of you that complain so much are still going to tune in and watch, whether it's because you just want to watch some football or so that you can laugh at the farce of a title game that results or so that you support the teams that got hosed. The NCAA guys and the college presidents know this, and as long as that continues you're going to get the BCS. They don't care what we say, as long as we keep watching. And they don't care what model you show them about how much more they can make with a playoff. They know what they're getting right now, and they like the way it works, so they're keeping it. The BCS exists to consolidate power and money among the big six conferences; it's not about crowning a champion. A playoff opens the door to teams outside of the Big Six getting the big money that would come from playing in a major bowl game, and the head honchos want no part of that. Which gets me to my next point.

The real outrage isn't that every few years one 11-1 gets left out of the title game; it's what happens on the bottom end. Take this year for example. It's possible that we'll have three teams ranked in the twenties getting automatic BCS bids because they're the champions of the Pac 10, Big East and ACC, while two or three deserving mid major schools get sut out entirely. Of the 10 BCS bids, six go to champions of the Big Six, and four are up to the discretion of the selectors. If USC doesn't win the Pac 10, then the at large bids will be swallowed by them along with whoever falls short from the Texas/Texas Tech/Oklahoma trio and the loser of the Alabama/Florida SEC title game. Now while that's better for business, because you'll have big guns that draw big audiences in big games, it sucks from a fairness standpoint. That scenario would leave four teams from mid major schools in the lurch. BYU and TCU have the potential to finish one loss, while Boise State and Ball State could finish their seasons undefeated. And yet, the best we can hope for is that one of them will get the last BCS bid.

That's what sucks; these teams are deserving of a chance to play on a big stage, yet at least three of them stand a good chance of getting screwed while two and three loss teams from the Big East and ACC get automatic bids so they can go get blown out and cash a big check.

i undertand your feelings but do you really think ball st., byu, tcu, can beat usc, florida, or texas even mizzou. so it would be a waste of time puttting them up there and besides they havent played none of the top 15 teams so my point is if byu tcu utah want to play for the national championship play some harder teams

Don't worry I will take care of everything

Hate to break it to you Mr. Anonymous but USC is overrated. Not as overrated as Notre Dame (and we see what happened with them going 0-8 last season) but nonetheless they are not as good of a squad as everyone makes them out to be. I noticed you had no mention of Texas Tech or Alabama in your little scenario, the currently #1 and #2 reigning kings of the BCS standings. They are there for a reason. Size of your school let alone your conference does not matter. Like with belonging to a major conference, that does not equate to wins or having the best program. Sure you more apt to recruit major talent and coaching staff however bottom line, no matter how you look at it, individual results will vary! In the now volatile world of college football where you have top seeds being upsetted more often than Paris Hilton changes BFF's, the days where teams are automatically good from year to year are over!

I agree with the premise that this is all about money and has nothing to do with crowning a true champion. I don't understand why college football can't reduce the regular season back to 11 games (plus conference title games), take the top 8 teams in the BCS standings, and let them have playoff games at various bowl sites.

I'm tired of the hypocrites who proclaim that the season would last too long when they allow Division I-AA teams to play 12 regular season games along with up to 4 additional playoff games (16 for the season) and they're done by December.

i agree with you completely with usc being overrated but the reason b state dont belong in the national championship is because how many times have they had a season like this unlike florida were they go 11-1 or undefeated like evey other year im with robert though there should be a playoff 2 c how good b-state is. now if they go undefeated and win their bowl game then yea they should be in top 10 next year no discussion but this is a fluke season like hawaii going undefeated (until they played georgia) and look were they at now
