Kurt Warner, Hall of Famer? - Robert Littal Presents The Infamous BlackSportsOnline

Kurt Warner, Hall of Famer?

Sounds crazy? Think again. Warner is in the midst of another Pro Bowl year with the Cardinals, and if they finish up 12-4 or 13-3, he could be in the running for another MVP award (he probably wouldn't win it, but he'll do well in the voting). Barring injury, he's on pace to finish up with 4,800 yards and 32 TDs for the season, and make the Pro Bowl. He could also make the All-Pro team, too. That would give him almost roughly 28,800 yards and 184 TDs for his career, and one more year with 3000 yards and 20 TDs would put him over the thresholds of 30,000 yards and 200 TDs. Now does that alone make him Canton worthy? Of course not. If you look further, you'll see that he already has three Pro Bowls (soon to be four) to his name, two MVPs, one Super Bowl MVP, and two first team All-Pro selections. After this season it will likely be four Pro Bowls, and possibly a third MVP award and a third All-Pro selection. That adds up to Hall of Fame in my book.

Disagree? Let's compare him to some others.

Troy Aikman: 32,942 yards, 165 TDs, 3 Super Bowl Wins, 1 SB MVP, 6 Pro Bowls, 0 first team All-Pro selections

Jim Kelly: 35,467 yards, 237 TDs, 4 Super Bowl appearances (no wins), 4 Pro Bowls, 1 first team All-Pro selection

Warner: 26,768 yards, 171 TDs, 2 Super Bowl appearances (1 win), 1 SB MVP, 3 Pro Bowls, 2 first team All-Pro selections, 2 regular season MVPs

So Warner matches up favorably with both of these guys, who each played 11 years. He'll have as many Pro Bowls as Kelly, more Super Bowl wins & MVPs than Kelly, more TDs than Aikman (and eventually maybe more than Kelly), and more first team All-Pro selections than either. he may also finish with more yards than Aikman. The only knock on him is that the middle part of his career, when he got hurt and lost his starting job in St. Louis then was pushed aside for Eli Manning in New York. His resurgence in Arizona should trump that, in my book.

Now will he get in? I'm skeptical. He doesn't have the pedigree, and isn't one of those guys that you think of when great quarterbacks come to mind. That will hurt him with voters, especially as the years go on and people forget actually watching him in action. I have no doubt in my mind that he deserves it, though.

I think he needs at least one more year like this one and he is in

I gotta say the fact that he has been able to bounce back from the rought years in the middle of his career, in my book makes him even more Hall-worthy. He's the ultimate feel good-story; from grocery-bagger to SB MVP on a team that was a cellar-dweller for years, then being a castoff, then being on top again. If he leads the Cards to single playoff-victory, if he actually was instrumental to the turnaround of one of the most dismal franchises in history; he should definitly be in the Hall of Fame. I think his stats is just the icing on the cake. The achievements Kurt Warner's teams have had with him under center are his true accomplishments.
